Mate 20 Pro update – Huawei’s next flagship could have a major advantage over the P30 Pro

Mate 20 Pro was unwrapped by Huawei back in October last year and shook the smartphone industry with its diverse camera system, then unmatched battery life and speedy performance.

Mate 20 Pro remains an incredibly appealing option for Android fans looking to upgrade their handset, especially because its price has fallen notably since its release.

Huawei is anticipated to be hard at work on a successor to the Mate 20 Pro, presumably titled the Mate 30 Pro.

Rumours and leaks around Huawei’s next flagship have been scarce, however it has been tipped to come with an improved processor in the form of the Kirin 985 and a new display with a 90Hz refresh rate.

It has also been speculated the device will come with a telephoto module on its rear capable of delivering a five-times optical zoom, similar to the P30 Pro.

Initially it had been speculated the Mate 30 Pro could arrive with a hole punch within its display to expose its front-facing camera system.

However, the most immediate compromise of this design choice would surely come from the need to remove the face unlocking hardware that was housed inside the Mate 20 Pro’s notch.

In addition to touting a 24-megapixel front-facing camera, the Mate 20 Pro also boasted a dot projector, flood illuminator, ambient light sensor and IR camera within its notch to deliver by far the most secure facial recognition system on an Android device.

Devices that do not feature such equipment, such as Huawei’s newer P30 Pro flagship, are typically less reliable in this regard because they are only using their front-facing camera to carry out such a function.

But, a new leak for the Mate 30 Pro has suggested the device could sport a similar facial recognition system to its predecessor.

Images, that have since been speculated to be of Huawei’s new flagship, recently appeared on Webio exhibiting the design of its front glass panel.

The trio of pictures showed a glass sheet with noticeable curved sides – it was also suggested the Mate 30 Pro’s display will come with incredibly tiny bezels surrounding it.

The notch at the top of the glass panel featured five holes within in which, as noted by GSMArena, is the same number as present on the Mate 20 Pro.

If the images from the Chinese site are accurate, it could mean the next entry in Huawei’s Mate series could similarly tout faster, and more secure, facial recognition than the P30 Pro.

While the new leak will surely be incredibly tantalising for Android fans, it is worth noting Huawei has not officially discussed the future of its Mate smartphone lineup.
