Man spends months building replica of his living room in VR – just to trash it

A 3D videogames artist decided to recreate his living room with astonishing detail in virtual reality—just so he can have a shootout with aliens.

Graham Rust used his Valve Index VR headset and 3D modelling skills to recreate every inch of his living room, including all of his belongings, and then map it into VR.

The artist shared an amazing video of himself exploring his virtual reality living room while in his actual living room, meaning his every movement syncs up as it does in the real world.

The difference? Rust is able to have shootouts with aliens and throw grenades around his living room, trashing the place with no consequences.

Half-Life: Alyx is the latest, long-awaited instalment in Valve's Half-Life franchise and one of the first story-driven VR shooters.

Players are transported to City-17 just before the events of Half-Life 2 to take up the role of the rebel leader's daughter, Alyx.

It won praise for its highly detailed and immersive VR world, with atmospheric graphics and a lightning-fast story.

It is one of the first major VR games to use a full physics engine, meaning players can pick up almost any object in-game and hold it, use it or throw it just as they would in real life.
