iPhone users plagued by iOS 12 update notification about phantom download

iPhone users are being plagued by an irritating notification telling them to download an update that doesn’t actually exist.

The pop-up message tells users: "A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 12 beta."

The notification pops up frequently – for some users, every time the phone is unlocked – and will reappear even when after it has been dismissed.

To add to users’ irritation, there is no new iOS update so it is impossible to act on the notification to make it go away.

The problem is believed to be affecting users running the beta version of Apple’s latest update, iOS 12.

Although it’s not due to launch in full for another few weeks, Apple made the public beta version available in June for those that want to help test it out.

Beta programs usually contain the odd bug or two as software companies use them to iron out the final kinks before sending it out as an update to all users.

The new bug appears to be a problem with a timer that reminds the phone when a new piece of software is available.

Apple is unlikely to be able to fix the problem without releasing an entirely new update to the iOS 12 beta.

Therefore, users will likely be unable to get rid of the phantom iOS update without actually updating the phone.

Plenty of users have been looking forward to iOS 12 – which launches on September 12 – as it brings with it a few new features for your iPhone and iPad.

According to Apple exec Craig Federighi, the new software will boost performance on older Apple gadgets so apps launch 40% faster while the keyboard comes up 50% faster when you need to tap out a message.

He also said that the camera app on older iPhones and iPads will open 70% faster once iOS 12 is installed.

Amazingly, some of the biggest new features of iOS are actually designed to make you use your iPhone LESS often.

Caps can be set on things like Instagram or WhatsApp to keep you focused and after the allocated time restriction, your device will block the app from working.

There will also be new ways to manage notifications in order to cut down on distracting messages appearing on your screen and an updated Do Not Disturb setting.

Daily and weekly updates of your iPhone or iPad usage will be available through Screen Time, which even shows you how often you pick up your device.

There have also been some improvements to Siri, Apple’s voice assistant.

A new feature called "shortcuts" lets third-party apps access and use Siri. An example shown on-stage was using Siri to say "I’ve lost my keys" and activate a linked up Tile bluetooth tracker that’s attached to your car keys.

Apple hasn’t forgotten animojis, either.

As well as now recognising when you stick out your tongue, Apple also introduced some new characters – like a ghost and a T-Rex.

There’s also now the option to create a cartoon version of your own face. Apple is calling it "Memoji" and you’ll probably start seeing a lot of them over the next few months.

Lastly, there’s finally the ability to have a group chat in FaceTime.

You can have up to 32 people in the same call and can even add Memoji’s to people’s faces.

Group FaceTime will work on iPhone, iPad and Mac while there’s an audio-only option for Apple Watch.

Of course, some or all of these features may not be 100% perfect in the beta version, but the more people that sign up to it, the better chance Apple has of fixing everything before releasing the software officially.

"As a member of the Apple Beta Software Program, you’ll be able to enroll your devices to access the public betas and try out the latest features," the company says.

"You can provide feedback directly to Apple using the Feedback Assistant app."
