iPhone pulverises Android in the latest round of sales: here are the full results

Research firm Omdia recently revealed its list of the best-selling smartphones of 2019. And to the surprise of many, Apple’s iPhone XR was by far the most popular.

Omdia claimed Apple’s more affordable iPhone – that launched back in September of 2018 – shipped a mightily impressive 46.3 million units last year. That’s 9 million more than the iPhone 11 that placed second in Omdia’s rankings for 2019.

That’s a significant leap in sales for the iPhone XR – back in 2018 Omdia said the handset shipped 23.1 million units.

The iPhone XR certainly marked a shift in Apple’s smartphone strategy. The iPhone 5c and iPhone SE aside, the tech firm has mostly refrained from releasing more affordable iPhone models alongside its traditional flagships. Instead, the firm has usually discounted the prices of its older devices for fans not willing to break the bank with their next upgrade.

However, it seems the release of an iPhone boasting many of the features as its flagship brothers with a lower price tag has proved to be incredibly popular.

Samsung’s A series of devices placed third, fourth and fifth in Omdia’s rankings. Interestingly, no flagship devices from any manufacturer other than Apple made an appearance in the research firm’s top 10 list.

Here’s a list of the 10 best-selling smartphones of 2019, according to data from Omdia, as relayed by 9to5Mac.

Jusy Hong, smartphone research and analysis director at Omdia, declared Apple have “consistently” held the first and second positions in its smartphone rankings. In fact, he claimed Apple have continuously outperformed their Android rivals in terms of sheer units sold per device for the past five years.

Hong explained: “Apple has consistently owned the first and second positions in the global smartphone model shipment ranking, with the company maintaining this dominant position for more than five years running.

“The company’s continued dominance on this front is all the more remarkable when considering that Apple’s price hikes caused overall iPhone shipments to decline last year. By limiting the number of models it offers compared to its top competitors, Apple has been able to concentrate its sales on a few smartphones that have broad appeal, like the iPhone XR.”

With Apple yet to release a 5G smartphone, Samsung and Huawei were noted to have dominated the market for handsets with support for next-generation networks.

Last year, the South Korean tech giant was noted to have accounted for 49 percent of the global 5G smartphone market while Chinese firm Huawei was noted to have captured 27 percent.

Omdia went on: “In 2019, Samsung accounted for 49 percent of the global 5G smartphone market, while Huawei ranked second with 27 percent. China’s vivo and Oppo took 12 percent and 5 percent, respectively. As Chinese OEMs are launching a large number of mid-priced 5G phones starting in the fourth quarter of 2019, the share of Chinese makers is expected to increase rapidly.”
