iPhone 11 Pro vs iPhone Xs: Apple won’t be pleased with the result of this speed test

Which iPhone is faster – last year’s iPhone XS, or the brand-new iPhone 11 Pro? Seems like the answer would be pretty simple, right?

Well, it turns out it’s not. YouTube channel EverythingApplePro has published a new app launch speed test that pits the iPhone 11 Pro against the iPhone XS and the iPhone X – all running iOS 13 – to see which is the fastest.

In the test, EverythingApplePro gets the handsets to launch a number of popular apps and perform common tasks, like loading up Fortnite to play a match, export a clip from a third-party video editor, and scrolling an Instagram feed.

Of course, these tests aren’t perfect. Real-world usage is notoriously tough to measure and app launch tests, like this one, or benchmarking software, like the popular Geekbench 5, doesn’t always tell the whole story.

That said, the EverythingApplePro clip isn’t good news for the Apple iPhone 11 Pro.

As with all of these speed tests, the first round shows how much raw power is available in the smartphone – showed by how fast it can load-up the apps for the first time and perform whatever task is required to move onto the next, while the second round tells us about the RAM management in the handset. If the phone can keep everything alive in its memory banks, it’ll have no worries bringing up the apps a second time – exactly where you left off.

However, if the smartphone has had to ditch the applications from its RAM, then it’s a case of loading everything anew again, which takes much longer. Android-powered handsets tend to perform much worse in the second round than those running iOS, since the mobile operating system isn’t as adapt at RAM management.

In this latest test, the iPhone 11 Pro edges out its predecessors in the first round – finishing one second faster than the iPhone XS, and 0.101 seconds faster than the iPhone X.

But things take an unexpected turn in the second round. The iPhone XS overtakes the iPhone 11 Pro, with the latter forced to reload a few apps that it couldn’t keep juggled in its RAM, despite having more at its disposal than the former.

This meant the iPhone XS finished at a podium-placing 5 minutes and 21 seconds, while the brand-new iPhone 11 Pro finished at a slower 5 minutes, 49 seconds.

Thankfully, it still managed to top 2017’s iPhone X, which finished in 7 minutes and 27 seconds.

As mentioned, this YouTube app speed test probably shouldn’t influence your buying decision if you’re weighing up between an iPhone XS and iPhone 11 Pro, as you’re unlikely to notice that kind of difference day-to-day. However, it’s interesting that iPhone 11 Pro seemingly has more trouble managing its RAM to keep open apps at its fingertips.

Hopefully, this is something that an upcoming iOS 13 update will fix – and we’ll get to see a rematch.
