iPhone 11 Max leak confirms a new type of camera for 2019

Apple is set to make a big change this year when it introduces a refreshed line-up of iPhones in September.

Heavy rumours suggest the tech giant will be adopting a triple-lens camera setup on the new phones in a bid to compete with Android rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the Huawei P30 Pro.

Those rumours have been injected with more fuel since gadget fans spotted a camera protector for the as-yet-unannounced iPhone 11 (or XI) Max listed on a retailer’s website.

The retailer, MobileFun, is carrying images of the camera protector shown over a mockup of the new iPhone. And there’s a very pronounced camera bump on the back to support the three lenses.

The product description listed on the website explains the camera protector as ‘ultra-thin tempered glass rear camera protectors for the iPhone 11 Max from Olixar offers toughness and superb clarity for your photography all in one package.’

Olixar is a pretty reputable brand when it comes to making iPhone accessories, so there’s a fair chance the company may have been tipped off about Apple’s plans. That would allow it to produce enough accessories to satisfy demand when the new product launches. It appears that the retailer may have let the cat out of the bag a bit early.

As well as the three lenses, the new iPhone is also rumoured to have an LED flash which would necessitate the squareish camera bump on the back. Given that this is referred to as the iPhone 11 Max, there’s always a chance that Apple will produce a smaller version that retains the double-lens of the iPhone XS.

This listing doesn’t give away any information about the phone’s camera specs, but previous rumours have suggested that there will be three 12-megapixel lenses this time around.

As well as the main and telephoto lens, the iPhone 11 Max will have an ultra-wide one for getting in more dynamic pictures.

Apple tends to reveal the new phones around the first or second week of September, so that’s when we’ll find out if there’s any truth to these fairly convincing leaks.
