Millions of Instagram users have been left offline – unable to refresh their feeds to check on new photos from accounts they follow, unable to watch Instagram Stories or Reels, and Direct messages not sending. Instagram has confirmed that it’s experiencing issues worldwide. The social media service – one of the most popular on the planet – is owned by Facebook. As well as Instagram, a number of other Facebook services have gone offline, including WhatsApp and the Facebook social media app.

Instagram hasn’t shared an ETA on when things will be fixed. The statement on the ongoing outage reads: “Instagram and friends are having a little bit of a hard time right now, and you may be having issues using them. Bear with us, we’re on it!”

Since WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram are all owned and operated by the same company, it seems likely the ongoing issues are localised to its servers – or code, and not part of a global attack on communication networks. This also means it probably isn’t a problem for the services that host many of the world’s leading websites and services.

According to DownDetector, which tracks outages, there were some 30,000 reports of problems logging into accounts and sharing pictures and messages.

From what has been shared so far, Instagram is not working on the popular App on phones or the desktop and mobile website versions. Those affected by the Instagram outage have been sharing details, with one user posting: “We don’t have to write where it is down because it is down everywhere…

Another adds: “I thought my phone was broken! I restarted my phone, turned aeroplane mode on and off, turned my data off, then back on. I was like, what is going on with my phone.”
