Huawei rips US government over China spying accusations

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei lashed out at Uncle Sam Friday after reporting a record $105 billion in sales for 2018.

“The US government has a loser’s attitude,” Chairman Guo Ping said at a press conference. “They want to smear Huawei because they can’t compete with us.”

Guo was referencing Washington’s concerns that Huawei equipment could be used as a tool for the Chinese government to spy on American citizens. This has led American government officials to ban agencies from purchasing Huawei hardware.

These concerns are unfounded, Guo said, because helping China spy on other countries would be “equal to suicide.”

“We have no intention of committing suicide,” he added.

The Justice Department in January sued Huawei for stealing trade secrets — a move that led to a countersuit from the Chinese company for banning federal employees from using their products.

This all comes as Meng Wanzhou — daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei — awaits extradition to the States following her arrest in Canada at the request of American officials for violating US sanctions against Iran.
