It’s the go-to website for many people when it comes to finding somewhere to stay while abroad.
But in recent months, the security of AirBnB has been questioned, after several users have discovered cameras hidden around their rented property.
While this might make you feel uneasy about renting through the site, thankfully there are a number of way to make sure you aren’t caught out by hidden cameras.
AirBnB does allow hosts to have surveillance devices in their property, but they must be listed in the House Rules.
On the AirBnB website, it says: “If you’re a host and you have any type of surveillance device in or around a listing, even if it’s not turned on or hooked up, we require that you indicate its presence in your House Rules.
“We also require you to disclose if an active recording is taking place.”
However, if you arrive at your AirBnB and are worried that a surveillance camera may not have been disclosed by the host, help is at hand.
Speaking to Lonely Planet , Jess Kelly, tech corespondent at Newstalk, gave some advice about how to spot a hidden camera.
She said: “It would be nice to think that you never have to worry about hidden cameras when staying in an Airbnb, however, I still find myself looking on bookshelves and above curtain rails every time.
“The big giveaway tends to be a red, blue or green light. Some cameras are motion-sensored, so keep an eye out for a light that just suddenly appears as you walk the room.”
And if you’re still worried about a hidden camera, Ms Kelly suggests leaving.
She added: “If you feel you are being watched, report and get out of [the situation].”
