Here’s How To Learn A New Language While Watching Netflix

Your time spent watching Netflix doesn’t have to be unproductive. You can learn the basics of a new language while watching your favorite shows now.

Who has the money for Rosetta Stone anymore? And while there are free apps such as Duolingo and the like, they can’t beat learning a new language while watching Game of Thrones (maybe you can even learn Dothraki).

By downloading the Language Learning With Netflix extension on Google Chrome, Netflix users can use the streaming service as their personal translator. After downloading the extension, you select the subtitle of the language you’re looking to learn while your show or movie begins.

Dialogue will appear below the vide in the chosen language, as well as a translation in your native language. Additionally, if you hover over a particular word, various definitions will pop up.

That’s not all, though; there are levels as well. Users will also be able to choose the vocabulary level that fits their expertise. So a beginner or intermediate would be given the option of having tricky words grayed out or replaced with easier ones. If it’s going too fast, you can slow subtitles down or even autoplay every one. The downside is having your show or movie lengthened.

If you’re unsure of what to watch but still want to learn a new language, there’s also a catalog of recommended subtitles.

This extension, though, will likely be more useful to persons who already have a firm grasp of another language and it would be quite hard for a beginner to master a new tongue by using it on its own.

Also, it would be better to use this extension with shows or movies you’ve already seen as it’s probably going to be a bit distracting if you’re trying to both learn and catch up on a new film.
