Google Pixel 4: Just when you thought nothing else could leak, THIS happens

Google Pixel 4 will launch tomorrow during the Made By Google event in New York City, which will also purportedly see a redesigned Google Home, Home Mini with a wall bracket, a Google Assistant-boasting Google Wi-Fi, and second-generation pair of Google Pixel Buds, and (fingers crossed) the long-rumoured Google Pixel Watch smartwatch. But when it comes to the Pixel 4, there’s little sense tuning into the live stream as everything, and we mean everything, has seemingly leaked online.

Over the weekend, a barrage of new information surfaced online – from the price, to the features, to the colours to expect on Tuesday October 15, 2019.

First up, one Reddit user shared what appears to be the final retail packaging for the Pixel 4. While we’ve already seen a number of leaked renders that seemingly unmask the handset from all angles, we’ve never seen the box this new flagship will arrive in… and what accessories it’ll be packing.

If the leak is accurate, there will be a photo of the back of the handset – with the iPhone 11 Pro Max-esque square camera module in full display – with a large Google “G” logo at the top of the packaging, with “Pixel 4” written underneath. The left edge of the box reads “Google,” while the “#teampixel” social media hashtag is on the back.

The box is very reminiscent of the Google Pixel 3a packaging, with the back of the box showing an image of the handset resting facedown. The trademark power button, which is also a different colour to the rest of the body, is facing towards the camera to highlight the bright, white key.

But as interesting as the final box-art is – this leak is really interesting because of what it tells us about the handset.

According to the photograph from Reddit, the Google Pixel 4 will have a 5.7-inch OLED touchscreen, with 64GB of built-in storage. That’s quite small compared to a number of its Android-powered rivals. However, Google always offers free unlimited photo and video storage in the cloud with its own-brand hardware, so it’s nothing to worry about.

The box also lists what is included with the phone: an 18W fast-charging USB-C wall plug, USB-C charging cable, and Quick Switch Adapter to plug your old handset into the Pixel 4 and shuffle across all the data. As rumoured, there are no headphones in the box. And Google has dropped its USB-C to 3.5mm adapter too, so those with 3.5mm wired headphones will have to cough-up for the dongle from the Google Store separately.

While the retail box was surfacing on Reddit, comedian Awkwafina was spotted in an Instagram story holding the Pixel 4 during the Variety “Power of Women” event. The social media post is notable because it reiterates the new colour that appeared in the New York Times Square advertisement, purportedly called “Oh So Orange”.

The “Power of Women” event was sponsored by the Google Pixel 4 – its logos are plastered all over the red carpet — so it’s perhaps not a huge surprise to see the smartphone in the hands of the stars. However, it’s a little odd to see the handset out-and-about before it’s officially announced by Google at its own event.

Nevertheless, we now have a pretty solid idea of what colours to expect from the Pixel 4 series: Black, White, and this peachy-orange finish.

Of course, it’s possible that Google will surprise all of us with a follow-up to its Black-and-White “Panda” finish from the Pixel 2 series, or a Kinda Blue from the same year.

And if that wasn’t enough, retailer Best Buy posted the complete listing for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 on its Canadian online store. The online listing reiterated a number of details we’d already heard about the Pixel 4, including the 5.7-inch screen size, as well as a 6.3-inch screen for the bigger Pixel 4 XL.

It also reiterates the secure face unlock system, which can be used to unlock the handset as well as authenticate secure apps, like banking. It seems to be the first true rival to Apple’s Face ID system, which is more secure than its fingerprint sensor and can be used to authenticate contactless payments via Apple Pay.

Until now, Android rivals like Samsung, Huawei and OnePlus have allowed users to unlock their smartphones with facial – and sometimes, iris – scanning tech, but never unlock banking applications, or authenticate payments with your credit or debit card.

The marketing materials included on Best Buy’s preorder page – which was swiftly taken down after it went live – boast that the Pixel 4 camera can help you shoot “studio-like photos anywhere.” It also reiterates the unlimited free storage in Google Photos.

Finally, it addresses the long-rumoured gestures – that let you control the handset by waving your hands above the screen. Dubbed Quick Gestures, the listing claims these will let you ”get things done without having to touch your phone”.

Google will hold its Made By Google event on Tuesday October 15, 2019. Express.co.uk will have all the latest news as soon as it’s announced, so stay tuned to find out which of the above leaks are accurate. And if there are any surprises left up Google’s sleeve.
