Google DOWN: What took out YouTube, Gmail and Snapchat? What caused the outage?

Google server issues have affected tech services across the United States with outages reported in the UK, Europe and other parts of the globe. Google users have reported long loading times on apps like Google Photos or crashes on the popular video service YouTube. On Sunday evening (June 2) more than 4,370 user-submitted reports to DownDetector.com complained of issues with Google and Snapchat. According to the website, Google has been having “issues since 12.57am EDT”.

One Google user, Zachary Salman, said: “Google Maps is still having trouble. The site itself loads but different function within it freeze up and sit there for two or three minutes before anything happens.”

Eva Friedberg said: “Can’t use Gmail through a third-party application (Quickbooks). Trying to send out May invoices!”

Another person complained of a “state-wide” outage in Idaho, US, and another report complained of slow Google Maps speeds in Aals Belgium.

Google Home also appears to have been affected by the server issues alongside Google Nest and people have claimed to have been locked out of their Gmail accounts.

According to a Google spokesperson, an issue with the tech giant’s Google Compute Engine has triggered a “larger network issue.”

The spokesperson said: “We are experiencing high levels of network congestion in the eastern USA, affecting multiple services in Google Cloud, GSuite and YouTube.

“Users may see slow performance or intermittent errors.

“We believe we have identified the root cause of the congestion and expect to a return to normal service shortly.”

As of Monday, June 3, most of Google’s services appear to be back and running as normal, although individual issues are still being reported.

Is Snapchat down? What is the latest on Snapchat?

Google’s servers problems have affected a raft of other services relying on the tech giant, such as Snapchat, Uber and chatroom software Discord.

At 8.20pm on Sunday, Snapchat’s support team tweeted: “We’re aware of an issue preventing some Snapchatters from using the app. Hang tight.”

User reports on DownDetector.com complained of people being unable to log in to their accounts.

Others reported not being able to upload photos to their Snapchat stories.

One person wrote: “Won’t let me upload photos to my story? Anyone else? Was down last night but came back and is now doing this.”

Another Twitter user said: “My Snapchat is sending my stories on a two hour delay. Fix your app.”

Mackenzie Papa said: “Snap still isn’t letting me post and it’s really p****** me off.”

And Victoria Smiley said: “My Snapchat will not upload any stories. But I can snap people.”

Despite these user reports, Snapchat’s support team announced on Monday morning the problem has been dealt with.

Snapchat Support tweeted: “The issue has been resolved. If you’re still having trouble, please let us know.”

If the app is still not functioning properly, Snapchat suggested force closing the app and restarting it after a few minutes.

Another possible workaround is logging out and logging back into the Snapchat app.

The support team wrote: “You may want to try logging out then log back into the app. But first, make sure your Memories have successfully backed up!

“Also, if you have Login Verification enabled please make sure you saved your Recovery Code before logging out.”
