If you’re the kind of person who has thousands of emails in their inbox, you’ll know just how tedious it can be to search through them to find what you’re looking for. Gmail already offers a few ways to filter search results, but Google is taking things to the next level with a feature called “search chips”.
In a nutshell, search chips are designed to give users a range of new filters they can apply after they’ve searched for a feature in Gmail.

For instance, if you’re looking for an email from a particular contact, you might enter the name of the person in Gmail and scroll continuously until you find what you’re looking for.
Search chips make the client more intelligent though by allowing users to apply filters which then lets them find items with certain attachments or within a specific time-frame for instance.
Discussing the new Gmail feature, Google said: “We’re introducing search chips in Gmail, an easier way to sort and filter search results to find exactly what you’re looking for faster.
“For example, you can search a colleague’s name and further narrow your results by selecting search chips like attachment type (Text document, Spreadsheet, PDF) or a specific time-frame. You can also filter out certain results, like calendar invites.
“With search chips, you can easily refine your search results and find what you’re looking for faster, without needing to sort through irrelevant returns or use search operators.”
The range of search chips available will appear underneath the search bar in Gmail after you’ve searched for a particular item.
Google said it introduced the feature following feedback from users asking for a faster and more intuitive search experience in Gmail.
Search chips have already started rolling out, but if you’re not already seeing the feature on your account, don’t worry. Google has said will take up until March 5 before it’s available for everyone.
You won’t need to turn on the functionality when it arrives – Google has said search chips will be enabled by default.
