Motorola has experienced somewhat of a resurgence of late. Last year the American firm announced it had remained profitable for four consecutive quarters – the first time since 2015. Motorola’s momentum continued with the grand unveiling of the new Razr in November that ditches a small pixelated display and physical keys for a single pliable OLED that folds in half. Android fans appear eager to ride Motorola’s nostalgia wave, too – the firm’s website now claims if you pre-order the new Razr you won’t receive it on its US launch date of February 6, presumably due to high demand.
Motorola might not be done there though. It seems the Chicago firm is hard at work on a new smartphone that will challenge the Galaxy Note 10’s S Pen with a stylus of its own.
Reliable leaker Evan Blass recently posted a picture of what seems to be a yet unannounced Motorola phone alongside a stylus. The phone itself follows standard smartphone practise for 2020 with an all-screen design complete with a hole-punch cutout.
Motorola’s signature circular home screen status icon is viewable, all but confirming the device in question is from the American firm.
A noticeable cutout is present at the bottom of the handset that could be used to store the phone’s accompanying stylus, much like on Samsung’s Galaxy Note series.
The stylus itself is certainly the most interesting part of the image. Two buttons are shown on the pen in total, both of which are located at the top. The tip of the stylus is shown to be round and soft unlike the S Pen that has a sharper tip.
The Galaxy Note series has long had its S Pen as its biggest differentiating factor. Samsung has positioned the stylus as an invaluable productivity tool for taking notes or sketching on the go. Apart from a few devices from South Korean rival LG, the Galaxy Note remains relatively unchallenged in the stylus-wielding smartphone category.
Samsung also recently announced the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, a device that’s expected to be more affordable than the regular Note 10 and Note 10+, cementing its commitment to the stylus accessory.
Unfortunately, Blass didn’t show the rear of the device, meaning we have no idea how many cameras it’ll boast or what colours we can expect.
It’s currently unclear when the Motorola phone in question could debut. As noted by The Verge, the date on the phone’s lock screen is displayed as April 3, suggesting this is when it might launch.
However, it seems much more likely the phone could be unveiled at the firm’s scheduled showcase at MWC next month. Motorola will take to the stage in Barcelona on February 23.
