With people reluctant to touch knobs and door handles in public places fearing to catch the novel coronavirus, hands-free door handles were being tested in a Finnish supermarket on Monday.
The shape of the handle allows the door to be opened with an arm instead of a hand. The aim is to prevent the spread of microbes through door handles.
On Tuesday, customers were able to test the invention. Many locals, such as occupational therapist, Stiina, welcomed the initiative. “I think it’s functional, I think people with disabilities could use this,” she said.
The door handles, made from recycled plastic, were developed in two weeks by Finnish energy company Fortum and printed using 3D technology.
As of Tuesday, Finland had 4,014 confirmed coronavirus cases and 141 deaths.
