Facebook reveals security breach affecting 50 million users

The hits keep on coming for Facebook.

On Friday, the social network revealed that it was the victim of a hack that affected nearly 50 million accounts and left 40 million others at risk.

Facebook discovered the breach on Tuesday, and determined that hackers had “exploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code” which allowed them to take over users’ accounts.

VP of product management Guy Rosen said in a blog post that Facebook took swift action against the hackers, resetting access to the affected accounts and logging out 90 million total accounts as a security precaution.

Rosen said it is as yet unclear if any accounts were misused or if any information was accessed, but that the situation is being investigated.

“People’s privacy and security is incredibly important, and we’re sorry this happened,” he wrote.

It’s the latest blow for Facebook, which earlier this week saw Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger leave the company, and was also hit by a lawsuit from a former content moderator.

Facebook shares were down 3.1 percent on the news, to $163.66.
