EE v Vodafone v O2 v Three – One network just beat its rivals but who comes out on top?

EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three have been put the test once again to see which network performs the best. This latest UK-wide report has been produced by the team at RootMetrics and measures key factors such as reliability, speeds, data, calls and texts.

So which network comes out on top and which is offering the best performance?

According to RootMetrics, EE is the best across all of its tests with the network beating its rivals in all of the most important categories.

Coming a very close second was Vodafone who is now nipping at the heels of EE. In fact, Vodafone was only marginally behind in every category and shows the investment in its service is paying off.

Three Mobile and O2 both scored less than their competitors although O2 has improved its ranking in four categories since early 2019.

This means the network has moved from fourth to third in the categories of overall performance, network reliability, network speed, and data performance.

Speaking about the results RootMetrics said: “EE continued its run of excellence in our UK-wide testing, clocking the fastest aggregate median download speed among all networks at 36.5 Mbps, while winning or sharing all six UK RootScore Awards for the fifth consecutive test period.

“Vodafone ranked second in five out of six categories, earned a share of the UK Text RootScore Award, and clocked the second-fastest aggregate median download speed at 19.8 Mbps.”

Along with these overall scores, RootMetrics has also tested each network for their average download speeds when away from Wi-Fi.

Once again EE comes top of the pile with the network averaging data downloads of 36.5Mbps.

Next came Vodafone with its customers getting an average of 19.8Mbps.

O2 and Three had almost identical speeds of 12.5Mpbs(O2) and 11.7Mbps (Three).

Key points from RootMetrics

EE delivers another brilliant performance in nation testing: EE earned 22 awards out of 24 total nation-level award chances and swept the awards in England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. What’s more, EE’s nation-level speeds also led the way; EE delivered aggregate median download speeds of at least 30 Mbps in three out of four nations (and 29.3 Mbps in the other). For context, at 30 Mbps, an end-user could download a 600MB video from Netflix in 2.7 minutes.

O2 strong in Northern Ireland and shows improvement elsewhere: O2 once again delivered its best results in Northern Ireland, with second-place rankings for network speed and data performance. While O2 ranked third in most categories across the nations, O2’s results improved in England, Northern Ireland, and Wales.

Three registers solid text results: While Three ranked third or fourth in every category across all four nations, Three’s text results were generally strong.

Vodafone’s results remains strong across the board: Ranking first or second in every category across the nations, Vodafone’s nation-level results were quite good in general. Vodafone’s aggregate median download speeds in Scotland and Wales were particularly impressive.
