EE launched its 5G mobile signal last year with this latest tech able to whizz the web to smartphones at speeds in excess of 300Mbps. At that rapid rate, you can download a full HD in around two minutes which is mightily impressive.
However, not content with speeding up our phones, the mobile network now wants to help bring these quicker downloads to more of your devices with the launch of its first own-brand WiFi mobile broadband device.
This little box of tricks is fully compatible with EE’s 5G signal and even allows up to 64 devices to connect to it at the same time – that could make it the ideal solution for busy homes that are full of internet-enabled gadgets. There’s also no messy installation needed with the box arriving in the post and customers simply plugging it in to get connected.
If you live in an area with 5G then this network-powered router could fix your broadband woes with it offering an average speed of 150 Mbps – that’s over twice the average UK fixed-line broadband speed. A 150Mbps connection would allow you to download your evening’s Hollywood blockbuster movie in around four minutes.
5GEE WiFi also supports the next-generation standard in WiFi technology, called Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 6 helps increases the 5GEE WiFi device’s efficiency in heavy bandwidth usage scenarios which makes it perfect for connecting large numbers of devices and high bandwidth services such as virtual reality.
Speaking about the device, Alistair Wilson, Director of Devices and Partnerships, EE said: “EE offers customers the UK’s fastest 5G service in more places, and we’re continually looking for ways to help provide them with new ways to get access to the best superfast internet connectivity on the go.
“Whether it’s for streaming new movies on a laptop or using the latest augmented reality services with a headset, when paired with our new 5GEE WiFi mobile broadband device, customers will be able to enjoy the incredible speeds offered by the UK’s number one 5G network.”
So, that all sounds pretty promising but there is one catch as it’s not exactly cheap.
EE says that customers can take delivery of its 5GEE WiFi broadband from £45 a month on a 24-month plan but that only includes 50GB of data.
Most homes will munch through that in no time and boosting things to 200GB of data will set you back a wallet-busting £90 per month.
If you’re a pretty light user and live in an area with great 5G but awful fixed-line speeds EE’s new box could be worth a look… just check how much you download each month before signing up.
