Bill Gates says Elon Musk could make Twitter worse and issues warning to users

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has warned that Elon Musk could make Twitter worse and warned users to "never underestimate'' his billionaire rival.

Musk snapped up Twitter for £34.5bn last month.

When asked about the impact the Tesla CEO could have on the social media platform, Gates warned: "He actually could make it worse.

"That's not his track record. His track record with Tesla and Space X is pretty mind-blowing at putting together a great team of engineers and taking people who work in those fields in a less bold way and really showing them up. I kind of doubt that'll happen this time but we should have an open mind and never underestimate Elon."

Musk says he bought Twitter so he could restore free speech on the app and move away from 'censorship'.

But speaking at the Wall Street Journal's CEO Council Summit, Gates questioned the intentions of Musk with the app.

He said: "When he talks about the openness, how does he feel about something such as 'vaccines kill people' or that 'Bill Gates is tracking people' is that one of the things he feels should be spread? so It's not totally clear what he is going to do.

"Are his goals for what it ends up being, does it match this idea of less extreme falsehoods spreading so quickly, weird conspiracy theories, does he share that goal or not?"

Last month Musk compared Gates to a pregnant man in a brutal tweet.

The Tesla founder ripped into his tech rival on the social media site, using a picture of Gates alongside an emoji of a pregnant man.

He captioned the post: "In case u need to lose a b*ner fast."

The world's richest person then posted a follow-up image in response to the tweet, depicting six hooded figures captioned "shadow ban council reviewing Tweet".

Some Twitter users were quick to laugh with the SpaceX founder's tweet, with one writing: "Why this man such a savage hahahahahah".

A second commented: "Literally just lost my b*ner", while a third added: "LOL PLEASE NEVER CHANGE!"

The vast majority of the comments however criticised Musk for his post and sided with the Microsoft founder.

One user said: "What the f*** is this the 7th grade?"

A second quipped: "This is such an unfortunate tweet by someone I otherwise have tremendous respect for.But despite this, Gates told the Summit he didn't take the tweets personally.

"Many will now think it’s OK to publicly bully those around them.

"If the richest man in the world does it, it must be OK, right? Bill Gates can handle it. Others not so much. Really bad look."

A third exclaimed: "Elon Musk is proof that money can't buy class," while a fourth added: "Dude, really? Be better than this tweet."
