Apple's next iPhone could resurrect old tech we thought was dead forever

Anyone who’s unlocked an iPhone using their face might have assumed the humble fingerprint detector was gone forever.

But the latest Apple rumours suggest rumours of the demise of this old-school technology have been greatly exaggerated.

With the release of the iPhone X, Apple introduced a game-changing Face ID system which opened up the device by snapping a picture of its owner’s beautiful visage.

Now a leaked report published by Apple Insider has claimed the hoary Touch ID security mechanism is set to make a comeback on the iPhone XI.

It said a document produced by a major British financial institution predicted the whole screen of the next iPhone will be turned into a fingerprint scanner.

If true, this means you’ll be able to press a finger anywhere on the screen to unlock the device.

The next iPhone is also likely to contain a three-camera system that will make for a rather unsightly bump on the back of the device.

By adding an extra lens, Apple could include additional features like optical zoom or better 3D sensing for things like augmented reality or artsy blurred portrait photos.

But it’ll also mean a larger, possibly squared-off camera bump that you’ll notice every time you try and lay the iPhone flat.

‘The latest leak of the iPhone 11 appears to confirm what most have been speculating; that the handset will feature a large, three-camera system on the back of the phone,’ commented Rob Baillie, mobile comms expert at comparemymobile.com

‘This is further proof that Apple is acknowledging the commonly held belief amongst tech-users that it has fallen far behind its competitors in terms of camera quality and photo clarity, so much so that it is willing to compromise on the phone’s iconic design in order to try and compete with the spec,’ he said.

‘The next instalment of iPhone, of which Apple had previously been extremely precious of, will now seemingly be forfeiting the traditionally sleek handset and easy to use and hold design, in favour of a new structure built to support multiple camera improvements and updates.’

‘To say that the look of the iPhone 11 will be jarring might be an understatement, with the unsightly bump somewhat of an eye-sore, taking away from the ergonomics of the handset. The camera will really have to be something special to justify its look, so we’re excitedly anxious to see what’s in store.’

Apple’s iPhone release schedule is pretty locked down these days. Although the company is undoubtedly working on the new phone, the rest of the world won’t get to see it until September. There may well be more leaks and rumours to go on as September approaches, but we’ve got to take each and every one of them with a pinch of salt.

In the meantime, if you’re interested in what a triple-lens camera bump looks like in the flesh, you need look no further than Huawei’s excellent Mate 20 Pro handset.
