The next time you shell out $1,000 for a new iPhone, don’t expect a pair of complementary headphones in the box.
Apple has jettisoned the popular freebie — as well as the 18W power adapter it has included with every iPhone — in an effort to reduce the size of the packaging for its new iPhone 12 handsets.
The smaller, accessory-free iPhone boxes will reduce shipping costs, which Apple needs to keep down as it includes more expensive 5G technology in all of its new phones.
Apple played the decision off as a move made with the environment in mind, noting during its keynote that there are more than 700 million pairs of its iconic white Lightning headphones in customers’ homes, as well as 2 billion charging bricks.
New iPhone owners who don’t have an adapter handy will have to shell out $20 if they want to buy an official one from Apple.
Without free headphones, customers will either need to buy an adapter to connect their old 3.5 mm headphones into the iPhone — which abandoned the headphone jack several years ago — or will need to shell out for Bluetooth headphones.
Apple recently removed its competitors’ headphones from its website and retail stores as it looks to bolster the sales of its mega-popular AirPods and prepares to launch new over-ear headphones.
