Apple workers ‘regularly hear couples having sex’ on Siri recordings

From Amazon’s Alexa to Apple’s Siri, smart assistants are now a part of many people’s daily lives.

But a new report may make you more wary of what you say and do in front of your smart assistant.

The report, by The Guardian, claims that Apple workers ‘regularly hear confidential details’ on Siri recordings.

Worrying, this includes recordings of couples having sex, confidential medical information, and even drug deals.

The report explained: “Although Apple does not explicitly disclose it in its consumer-facing privacy documentation, a small proportion of Siri recordings are passed on to contractors working for the company around the world.

“They are tasked with grading the responses on a variety of factors, including whether the activation of the voice assistant was deliberate or accidental, whether the query was something Siri could be expected to help with and whether Siri’s response was appropriate.”

Apple claims that this data is used to make Siri better at understanding and responding to users.

Speaking to the Guardian, Apple explained: “A small portion of Siri requests are analysed to improve Siri and dictation. User requests are not associated with the user’s Apple ID.

“Siri responses are analysed in secure facilities and all reviewers are under the obligation to adhere to Apple’s strict confidentiality requirements.”

According to Apple, less than 1% of daily Siri recordings are listened to by workers.

However, speaking to the Guardian, an anonymous Apple worker has expressed concerns about the system, and in particular the fact that many recordings are started without the ‘Hey Siri’ trigger word.

The Apple worker said: “There have been countless instances of recordings featuring private discussions between doctors and patients, business deals, seemingly criminal dealings, sexual encounters and so on.
