Apple tipped to reveal iPhone 9 and/or iPhone SE 2 at 'secret' event

Apple historically has big media events every September where it reveals the latest iPhones, iPads and Mac gadgets.

But the company is also known to occasionally announce new products at a springtime event and rumours are starting to swirl about one taking place next month.

Several tech blogs are suggesting Apple will hold some kind of ‘secret’ event on March 31 to reveal a new iPhone and, possibly, a new iPad Pro. The iPhone in question is set to be a smaller, more affordable device that some have called the iPhone SE 2 and others have called the iPhone 9. You’ll remember that Apple skipped the 9 moniker and went straight from iPhone 8 to iPhone X.

‘The launch of a new device, which is almost certainly the expected successor to the iPhone SE, is planned for Friday, April 3,’ reported iPhone Ticker, citing a source ‘directly from the Apple environment’ as its basis.

The site continued: ‘At the beginning of the previous week, the presentation should then take place as part of a press event, in all likelihood Tuesday, March 31st is scheduled for this.’

Metro.co.uk has been unable to verify this information so we’re treating it with a degree of scepticism.

However, Apple did release a string of new products last spring, albeit through press releases rather than by hosting an actual event.

The iPhone SE (which stood for Special Edition) was unveiled in 2016 and had the body of an iPhone 5S but with upgraded internal specs. The handset has developed a cult following from those who feel newer smartphones have become too large.

‘It is almost certain that Apple will probably launch a comparatively inexpensive iPhone model under the name ‘iPhone 9’, which relies on the design of the iPhone 8, but in terms of processor and RAM is brought up to date,’ commented iPhone Ticker.

Meanwhile, the iPad Pro would be in line for a refresh which may see the camera upgraded to something similar to the iPhone 11 Pro.

And, as the cherry on top of this huge rumour sundae, we may also get a new form of budget AirPods designed to accompany the iPhone 9. Or iPhone SE 2 or whatever it ends up being called. If it even exists.
