Apple Store down sparking rumours that new iPads and AirPower could launch today

The Apple Store is currently offline, sparking rumours that the iPhone maker could be about to launch its next generation of iPads.

The site is currently showing a holding image of the Apple logo with the words "Be right back", and the statement: "We’re making updates to the Apple Store. Check back soon."

It doesn’t say what the updates will be, but the company is rumoured to gearing up to launch new versions of its iPad and iPad Mini, along with its long-awaited AirPower wireless charger.

It has also been suggested that a new version of the iMac could be on the way.

It was thought the new hardware would be unveiled at Apple’s forthcoming event on March 25.

But it seems the tech giant may be planning to slip the new devices out early, so that the event can focus on its new content subscription services.

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman cryptically tweeted over the weekend that Apple was planning updates to the iPad and iMac lines ahead of the "It’s showtime" event.

The company is rumoured to be planning to launch a $1 billion rival to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video at the March 25 event, along with a news subscription service.

The video streaming service will reportedly offer original content, as well as TV shows and movies from the likes of Nickelodeon, MTV and Vh1.

Meanwhile, the news subscription service is said to offer access to popular newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal for a fixed monthly fee.
