Apple Music has a new plan to tackle Spotify Unwrapped 2020. You can test it right now

For Spotify subscribers, Unwrapped is one of the most anticipated updates of the year. The feature, which typically debuts in the first week of December, reveals a truckload of statistics about your listening habits over the last 12 months… well, technically, only the last 11 months as Spotify stops tracking around mid-November to start collating all of the data.

As well as listening habit trends, number of hours spent listening to a specific artist, and most-streamed song, Spotify provides a playlist with all the tracks you’ve enjoyed over the course of the last year. As soon as it launches, screenshots from Spotify Unwrapped can be found across social media as subscribers rush to share their latest listening habits.

Apple Music tried to capture some of that magic last year with the launch of its own retrospective playlists, dubbed Apple Music Replay. To make up for lost time when it debuted the feature last year, Apple allowed users to download playlists of their most-streamed songs from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

So, Apple Music subscribers will be able to have the exact same number of nostalgic playlists in their library as those using Spotify, despite the rival service sporting the feature for years.

In comparison to Spotify Unwrapped, Apple Music’s offering is pretty basic. While a dedicated website — replay.music.apple.com — does offer some insights into your music habits, it doesn’t quite have the same level of polish as Unwrapped. However, Apple has changed the formula this year by launching its 2020 Apple Music Replay already. Yes, that’s right — you can already track your listening habits for the year two months into 2020.

Instead of making you sit tight until December to start your walk down memory lane, Apple Music subscribers can start listening to their Replay 2020 playlist now. As you add more songs to your library or start playing a particular song on repeat, you’ll be able to see the playlist evolve and change with your tastes until it’s finally locked down at the end of the year.

You’ll have to visit the replay.music.apple.com website on your iPhone or Android web browser to add it to your library at the moment (Apple didn’t add the ability to generate your personalised playlist into the streaming app itself until much closer to the end of the year last time around, so we’d expect to see the same thing as 2021 draws closer).

You’ll have to visit the site through a mobile or desktop browser to add the playlist. You’ll need to have the Apple Music app or iTunes installed on whatever device you’re using to add it to your library. Once added, you’ll get an automatically-updating look at your top tracks of the year.

As you listen to more artists, tracks, and genres – the playlist will shift.

It’s an interesting take on the retrospective playlist. And it could be fun to watch your favourite shuffle around as your tastes change over the course of the next 12 months.

If nothing else, it should be a quick way to access your favourite tracks. As for Spotify, we can’t imagine this will faze them at all – the hype surrounding the launch of Unwrapped generates the kind of publicity can’t buy.
