Apple will debut its next-generation iPhone operating system, iOS 13, on Thursday September 19, 2019.
The upgrade brings a slew of new features, including a system-wide Dark Mode to save your eyes at night, two-times faster app loads, new photo and video editing features within the Photos app, tighter controls on location, and swipe-selection on the default iOS keyboard.
Not only that, but iOS 13 should be a very welcome addition to anyone struggling for storage space on their iPhone, with app downloads now 50 percent smaller, and 60 percent smaller when updating.
Unfortunately, not every iPhone that was able to run iOS 12 – the previous operating system – will be able to make the leap to iOS 13.
So, if you’re running one of those handsets you’ll need to either upgrade your iPhone to a newer model, or live without the latest features.
The only iPhone models which are getting the bump to iOS 13 are:
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone SE
- iPod touch (7th generation)
That means iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 5S are no longer getting the latest mobile operating system upgrades from Apple and will be stuck on iOS 12 forever.
And if you’re wondering why there are no iPads on the list, that’s because Apple has shaken things up this year.
Apple’s iPad range will no longer run iOS, but will instead get their own off-shoot of the mobile operating system dubbed iPadOS, which has a number of features not available to iPhone and iPod Touch owners. Most notably, iPad users will be able to run a column of iOS widgets on the Home Screen alongside their app icons.
There are also a number of new multi-tasking capabilities, as well as gestures for copy and paste – something you’ve previously only been able to do by long-pressing on a part of the text and selecting an option from the menu that appears.
iPadOS doesn’t launch until Septemebr 30, 2019, while iOS 13 is available to everyone running one of the smartphones above on Thurday September 19, 2019.
Apple typically starts to roll-out its iOS updates at 10am in Cupertino, California. That means we should start to see the new mobile operating system land at around 6pm in the UK.
If your iPhone is elligible for the upgrade, it’s worth taking the time to update to iOS 13. Not only does it bring a number of new features, but applications load twice as fast, and app updates are 60 percent smaller – ideal for anyone who is suffering with ‘No Available Free Storage’ alerts popping up on their screen each and every time they attempt to download a new app, or take a photo.
