Apple iOS 12 flags your weak passwords and suggests more secure alternatives

While it’s tempting to use the same password over and over again, this can leave your accounts and profiles extremely vulnerable to hackers .

In the hopes of encouraging users to choose more secure passwords, Apple has added a new password features in iOS .

The feature will flag weak passwords to you, and suggest more secure alternatives.

This works in two ways – automatic strong passwords, and password auditing.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Automatic strong passwords

If you’re prompted by a website or app to choose a password, Apple will now automatically offer to generate a secure one for you.

And while you might think that remembering these new passwords would be tough – the good news is that Apple will automatically save the passwords in Safari and apps.

To use the feature:

1. Launch Safari

2. Navigate to a site that asks you to create new login details

3. Enter your email address or username

4. Tap on the Password field

5. iOS will generate a strong password for you

6. Tap ‘Use Strong Password’ to accept the suggestion

7. This will automatically be saved to your iCloud Keychain

Password auditing

Apple has also introduced a new password auditing feature in iOS 12.

This means that weak or reused passwords will be flagged to you, and more secure alternatives will be suggested.

To use the feature:

1. Go to Settings, and then Passwords & Accounts

2. Use Touch ID, Face ID or your passcode to access

3. Scroll through your passwords – any that are weak or reused will have a triangle warning symbol next to them

4. Tap on the triangle, and then tap ‘Change Password on Website’
