Ever since its release in 2007, the iPhone has been held up as one of the most revolutionary pieces of technology in the modern day.

But while we've all been focused on its touchscreen and TikTok abilities, some key details have passed many users by.

When the iPhone first came out, Apple already had a number of products beginning with the letter 'i'.

So, at the time, people just assumed iPhone was named after 'iTunes', 'iPod', 'iMac', or one of Apple's several other successful products beginning with 'i'.

However, it turns out that the 'i' in iPhone actually has a secret meaning given by legendary Apple CEO Steve Jobs before his death.

In 1998, Jobs revealed that the 'i' stands for five different words linked to the company's philosophy.

The words are 'Internet', 'individual', 'instruct', 'inform' and 'inspire'.

The 'i' was first introduced with the iMac in 1998. At the time, Steve Jobs explained that the product was targeted at people who wanted to use a computer to access the Internet—which was still quite new back then.

At the time, Jobs told Business Insider: "'I' also means some other things to us. We are a personal-computer company, and although this product is born to network, it also is a beautiful standalone product. We are targeting it also for education. They want to buy these. And it is perfect for most of the things they do in instruction."

The 'i' in iPhone is just one of the cryptic symbols used by Apple to symbolise its design philosophy.

Last year, Apple fans had their minds blown by the revelation that the logo is just made of a series of circles, rather than being a hand-drawn image of an Apple.
