Amazing folding phone leaks – is this going to be the killer device of 2019

A new leak has detailed what might be a brand new kind of folding phone or tablet. Purported to be built by Chinese firm Xiaomi, a video demonstrates a fantastic three way folding device.

It starts looking like a normal tablet but then the left and right sides are folded in and create a much smaller, phone-sized device.

But hold the excitement for a second. Like a lot of folding devices there are more questions raised by the video than answered.

Like Samsung’s on-stage reveal for its folding phone the video here is shot with almost no background or foreground light. While the screen – and fold – is clearly visible, the device is not.

That suggests that either the device is uglier than an infected wound, or in a very early prototype mode that’s nowhere near ready for production.

But without more details it’s impossible to know if this device is anything more than hype at the moment. Which is something that noted leaker Evan Blass calls out in his tweet about the product.

Also worth noting are the likely complications of folding a phone screen. How does the phone handle your fingers on the touch surface when it’s folded. This should be simple, but getting this wrong would make the device difficult to use.

What is impressive, however, is the idea that a device could soon have this functionality. The ability to use a large screen but which is small enough to fit in a pocket is appealing.

Foldable devices will be a big thing in 2019. Will you buy one? Almost certainly not, the first phones and tablets will probably very expensive.

However these devices will soon start to improve as companies learn more about manufacturing them. By next year it’s likely that folding phones could be a stable of the industry – with perhaps even Apple joining in.
