In addition to their never-ending COVID-19 issues, the Yankees’ season-long parade to the injured list continued Monday when third baseman Gio Urshela was shelved with a strained hamstring.

Urshela underwent an MRI exam and has been diagnosed with a “Grade 1 or Grade 2 strain,” manager Aaron Boone said following Monday’s 7-1 loss to the Orioles.

“He’s actually doing pretty well, so we can back-date it a couple of days [to Sunday],” Boone said. “He’ll continue to ramp up here in the next couple of days and hopefully it will be just another week or eight days or so.”

Boone also revealed that Gerrit Cole will be scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday after he became the latest Yankee to test positive for COVID-19 this season.

Domingo German, who was placed on the IL over the weekend in Miami with a shoulder issue, has been diagnosed with what Boone termed “a low-grade rotator cuff strain.” German will be shut down for around 7-10 days, according to Boone.

Perhaps the most excitement for the home crowd of nearly 29,000 Monday came in the bottom of the eighth inning, when the lopsided game was delayed for several minutes while the grounds crew attempted to corral a stray cat loose on the warning track, prompting the fans to chant “MVP” and “Let’s Go Cat.”

“That thing was pretty elusive to catch there,” outfielder Joey Gallo said. “Their tactics to get it I think could’ve been worked on. But that thing was quick.”

Regular designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton started in the outfield for the third time in four games. Aaron Judge served as the DH with Stanton manning right field after starting twice in left against the Marlins.

“I think first and foremost the ability to get out there once or twice a week is really beneficial team-wise,” Boone said. “We’re in the middle of 17 games in a row right now. [Judge] is coming off the COVID-IL and playing every day. It allows me to DH him today coming off the road trip.”

Corey Kluber (shoulder) tossed a 22-pitch simulated game off the Stadium mound before the game. Boone said the outing “went really well” and called it “another really positive step.”

Luis Severino (elbow) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday for Double-A Somerset Clint Frazier (vertigo) also “could” begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday, Boone said.

The Yankees honored and showed highlights of Thurman Munson before the game. It was the 42nd anniversary of the All-Star catcher’s death in a plane crash in 1979.
