A hometown deal couldn’t beat the extra year of security.
Coveted free-agent pitcher Patrick Corbin agreed to a six-year deal with the Nationals on Tuesday after the Yankees were unwilling to offer a sixth year, according to multiple reports.
The Post’s Joel Sherman reported that the Yankees had been steadfast on a five-year deal for Corbin. The Syracuse native made it no secret he would have liked to pitch for the Yankees, but instead opted for the Nationals, who are giving him $140 million over six years.
The Phillies also were seen as a serious contender for Corbin, the 29-year-old lefty who posted a 3.15 ERA last year with the Diamondbacks.
While the top of the Nationals’ rotation is now stacked — Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Corbin — the Yankees will have to look elsewhere to further bolster their starting pitching, with J.A. Happ and Nathan Eovaldi as options. They also could look to trade with Cleveland, for Corey Kluber or Carlos Carrasco.
