Whoopi Goldberg, Meghan McCain get attention for heated ‘View’ exchange: ‘Please stop talking’

Whoopi Goldberg and Meghan McCain have exchanged heated words on “The View” many times, but Monday’s episode of the talk show had social media buzzing.

During the episode, while the co-hosts discussed the impeachment inquiry targeting President Donald Trump, Sunny Hostin spoke out against senators who voted to impeach President Bill Clinton but not Trump.

“That is the height of hypocrisy for this Republican-led Senate,” Hostin said to cheers from the audience.

McCain chimed in. “My job is to analyze the politics of it. And I’m telling you – ” she said before Hostin cut her off.

“But I’m not talking about you,” Hostin said. “I’m talking about the people that are the senators…”

The co-hosts began talking over each other. “Just let me finish. I let you talk, let me finish,” McCain said.

McCain questioned whether they “wanted to hear a conservative perspective on this show ever.”

“Girl, please stop talking, please stop talking right now,” Goldberg said across the desk.

“No problem, I won’t talk to the rest of the show, no problem,” McCain responded with a laugh.

“I’m OK with that,” Goldberg retorted. “If you’re going to behave like this…”

“I’m not behaving like anything,” McCain replied, to which Goldberg answered, “You are!”

After more talking over each other, Goldberg cut to commercial.

“We’re not doing anything. How about this, former FBI – we’ll be right back,” she finished, throwing her hands up.

The word “Whoopi,” along with reactions and clips of the show, trended on Twitter.

Though she didn’t comment on the segment directly, McCain shared a link to poll results regarding the impeachment immediately after the show. She wrote, “Pointing out things that are true is part of my job even if it angers people and even if it’s politically inconvenient.”

Despite some tense moments on the show, McCain has solid friendships with several of her co-hosts. She’s spoken about her bond with Joy Behar, though they often butt heads on camera, and she has a longtime friendship with Abby Huntsman.

“This is a very hard job,” McCain told Behar during a sit-down for “Entertainment Tonight.” “I think because you and I are so emotionally invested in the topics, I get very upset or happy. It’s like, lots of intense emotions on this show, and part of it is the political climate we’re in, and part of it’s just the nature of the show. Getting booed is very hard.”

In November, Huntsman told People she and McCain are like “salt and pepper.”

“I always say, ‘Everyone needs salt and pepper, and you need them both together.’ You don’t just want the pepper, and you don’t just want the salt,” Huntsman said.
