Walker vows to make waves in Champions League for Kompany as Man City stars enjoy boat trip in Hong Kong – The Sun

KYLE WALKER is desperate to taste Champions League glory for his former dining partner Vincent Kompany.

The long-serving skipper bowed out of the Etihad this summer but not before urging the team-mates he left behind to become the kings of Europe.

His departure along with Fabian Delph means Walker could be left on a table for one at their training base this season.

But the big aim for those left behind is to make sure City are dining at Europe's top table when the final comes round in May.

Walker said: "Vinny's a big miss, especially for me, and Delphy's gone as well. We had a little group and we used to sit together for food, and now it's wearing thin.

"For Vinny this place obviously had a special place in his heart and for us we need to go and try to listen to him – as always – and go and get the Champions League, what he wanted.

"I've said before, that for City to be where they want to be I think they need to win the Champions League. I think we need to win the Champions League, us as players.

'"I think some of the players in the dressing room have achieved too much in their career and done too much for football not to win the Champions League.

'So, we owe it to them and ourselves."

Walker believes Pep Guardiola's City have established themselves as one of the great teams of the Premier League era over the last couple of seasons.

They reached 100 points in 2017/8 then followed it up with 98 last term – while also winning an unprecedented domestic treble.

Yet worryingly for their rivals, he believes they can still improve as they prepare for the new campaign out in the Far East.

He said: "The first year I was here was phenomenal and nobody thought that could be bettered, but we topped that. So hopefully this year we can do something special.

"It's going to come with a lot of challenges and a lot of surprises but I feel as a team we have got the experience now to go and achieve what we want to.

"It's been great since I moved two years ago. I've achieved things I didn't think I'd achieve in football.

"To win not one but two Premier League titles has been fantastic and the records we have achieved, making us one of the great Premier League teams of all time – I don't think I would have achieved that if I wasn't with City."

Walker was rewarded for his efforts at City with a new five year contract in the summer and believes he can spend most of it performing at the top level.

He added: "I'm 29 and I still feel young and fit. I'm still wanting to learn as well. I feel there is still definitely a good three or four more years in me where I can still move.

"There are still things to improve on on the pitch but I do work hard, I can assure you of that. I try to be the best I can in each and every game."

And in Guardiola, he believes he has the perfect manager to keep moving forward.

The former Tottenham man said: "You have to learn the position quickly and how the manager wants you to play. If not, you'd probably be sat with him because he needs perfection.

The first couple of months were a bit hard to adapt to. I was constantly wide at Tottenham and playing more as a wing-back.

"To come here and play more inside was a bit difficult to get used to. But I've got used to it now. I save a bit more energy and put the onus on the midfielders and forwards to go and get the goals."
