Virgil van Dijk going through 'hell' as he recovers from season-ending injury, reveals Liverpool team-mate Wijnaldum

GINI WIJNALDUM has offered an update on his Virgil van Dijk, revealing his team-mate is going through 'hell'.

The Dutch defender suffered a season-ending injury in the opening ten minutes of last month's Merseyside derby.

Van Dijk, 29, has undergone successful surgery in London to repair his ACL.

But he now faces months on the sidelines as he recuperates.

Dutch mate Wijnaldum, 29, has offered an update on the star defender.

He told VI: "Virgil will return with God's will.

"It is a difficult time for him; this is the worst thing you can experience as a football player.

"You go through hell. But I think he is very strong. We FaceTime every now and then and that is very nice.”

Wijnaldum also gave his thoughts on reporting for international duty, after a number of complaints from bosses amid Covid fears and fixture congestion.

He added: "As a club you never have the guarantee that you will get players back completely fit.

“We play three international matches and that takes energy.

"But as a football player I think it is great to play many matches with the Dutch national team.”

The Netherlands face a triple-header of games, taking on Spain, Bosnia and Poland over the next nine days.
