University of Canberra smashed in penultimate sevens round

The University of Canberra sevens side slumped to horror defeats in the penultimate round of the national series, leaking a combined 113 points to be languishing after day one.

A re-jigged Canberra struggled to find cohesion on the Gold Coast after injuries and player unavailability forced coach Dave Grimmond to make seven changes to his touring squad.

It left Canberra exposed and they started the round with a 45-5 loss against Griffith University before struggling again in a 42-12 defeat against Sydney University.

They then failed to fire in the last game of the day, losing against Bond University 26-0, leaving them at the bottom of their pool and out of the running for the major prizes.

Canberra was fourth on the overall standings before the weekend and had hoped to earn a shot at the final, but they lacked combinations as new faces struggled to make an impact.

They will play the University of Tasmania in the final pool match on Sunday, and need strong results in the finals to keep their place on the overall ladder.
