‘Time we grow up’: Smith calls for tougher stance on bad behaviour

Cameron Smith says longer bans and even deregistrations should be considered for NRL players who disgrace themselves off the field.

The Melbourne Storm captain and Rugby League Players Association general president didn’t hide his frustration after several high-profile players found trouble this off-season, with Greg Inglis caught drink driving in October last year and old videos of representative forward Dylan Napa in sexual acts were made public this month.

"It doesn't matter what code you play, you've got to make the right choices and if not, there are consequences involved."

Smith was part of the conference call with Greenberg and backed up his plans for harsher penalties.

"Absolutely. Clearly the past penalties haven't had any deterrence," Smith said.

“I'm all for harsher penalties."

When asked if more serious or repeated acts needed bans from the sport overall, he didn’t rule it out.

"Depending on the indiscretion and severity of it – I’m all for that,” Smith said.

Smith spoke in Geelong as the Storm complete a two-week camp and prepare to host a trial game against the New Zealand Warriors at GMHBA Stadium on February 22.
