Thierry Henry explains Wenger & Guardiola influence at Monaco unveiling

Thierry Henry claimed he was returning “home” as he was unveiled as the new Monaco coach today – and revealed he had to re-learn the game after leaving Arsenal to play under Pep Guardiola.

The Arsenal legend said he will take lessons from Arsene Wenger and the Manchester City boss into his first managerial job.

Henry started his career at Monaco under Wenger before moving to Juventus in 1999.

At the age of 41, he is now taking over a club in the relegation zone in Ligue 1.

At a showbiz-style ceremony at Monaco Yacht Club, he said. “When the offer came, it was quite logical. My heart spoke. You know the connection I have with a club in London, but this is where I started.

"This is my first club. It’s where I scored my first goal, where I blossomed with Arsene here. It is a place which has a place in my heart. I have always looked for Monac’s results since I left and that will never change.

"Now to come back, is extraordinary. It is a dream come true. I am very happy.”

Henry insisted he would be “flexible” as a coach but cited Wenger and Guardiola as big influences.

“If I talk about Arsene, he taught me how to be professional," he said. "He unlocked a lot of stuff in my mind. I will never forget that. You know the relationship I have with him. I will always carry some of the stuff he taught me.

“Pep for me is the reference. I re-learned how to play the game at Barcelona under him. Pep talks about the game. You will fall asleep and he is still talking. Some of his invention – he is well ahead of the game. I saw it closely.”

Henry’s first match will be at Strasbourg on Saturday night.
