The Reds can’t find a way to trade Matt Harvey

Matt Harvey is stuck in Cincinnati.

The Reds and Brewers failed to agree to a trade on Friday that would have put the right-hander in the middle of a pennant race, Reds GM Nick Krall confirmed to reporters. The Brewers claimed Harvey off waivers, meaning they were the only team the Reds were allowed to trade him to. The Reds also failed to find a trade match for Harvey before July’s non-waiver deadline.

The Mets dealt Harvey to the Reds for catcher Devin Mesoraco in May after a miserable start to the season and a refusal to accept a minor-league assignment.

Harvey has re-discovered some of the ability that aided his rise to stardom with the Mets. The 29-year-old is 6-5 with a 4.28 ERA in 17 starts with the Reds, as some of the life has returned to his fastball. He had a 7.00 ERA in the first month of the season for the Mets between four starts and four relief appearances.

Harvey will be a free agent after this season.
