Sunderland attract third biggest attendance in English football in stunning turnout

The Stadium of Light hosted 46,039 fans today as Sunderland beat Bradford 1-0 thanks to a first-half Aiden McGeady goal.

Sunderland’s supporters eclipsed those at Wembley to watch Tottenham beat Bournemouth 5-0.

Wembley had 45,154 of their 90,000 seats occupied as Spurs climbed to second in the league, six points behind leaders Liverpool.

Manchester United and Liverpool were the only teams to have recorded a higher attendance than Sunderland today.

Liverpool had 53,318 watch them win their seventh league game in a row, while 74,523 fans watched new caretaker United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pick up two wins in as many matches.

United bagged all three points as they beat Huddersfield 3-1 thanks to a double from Paul Pogba at Old Trafford.

While Liverpool took advantage of Man City losing to Leicester as Jurgen Klopp's side went six points clear at the top.

For Sunderland their 1-0 win leaves them third in the league, five points behind leaders Portsmouth.

Sunderland have two games in hand over Portsmouth and second place Luton.

The Black Cats could go top if they win their two games in hand as they bid to get promoted to the Championship two seasons removed from when they were relegated.
