Stephen Curry continued pushing this moon-landing story in a positive direction by having a conversation with a retired astronaut via Instagram Live on Saturday.
The Golden State Warriors star and two-time NBA MVP recently freaked some people out when, as a guest on The Ringer's "Winging It" podcast, he said he didn't think astronauts really landed on the moon. It put him in a category with Kyrie Irving, who repeatedly said he thought the Earth is flat.
NASA invited Curry to take a tour of the lunar lab at our Johnson Space Center in Houston, and then Curry admitted he was joking and didn't mean for people to take him seriously — which made us wonder if all Curry really wanted was an invitation to visit NASA.
Amid all of this, Curry said he is still fully realizing the magnitude of his comments — jokes or not — and that led him to live-stream a conversation with Scott Kelly, a retired Navy captain and astronaut who made four trips to space.
“It was important for me to understand, one, the magnitude of things that I say in my comments, and how much weight they carry, no matter if I am joking or not, but really honor that in every situation I put myself in," Curry said.
“The sense of national pride in how that exploration for mankind has pushed boundaries and limits of what is possible, you know, pushed our imagination for what we can accomplish. […] I do not want to in any way, shape or form demean the significant accomplishments that you, and the people you work with on a daily basis, make a reality.
"I'm genuinely sorry for how that came across and I want to want to use this as an opportunity for some positivity."
