Stable hopeful youngster won’t be beaten at Gunnedah

This time last year leading Mudgee trainer Gayna Williams was wondering what might have been with promising youngster We Can’t Be Beaten.

Just weeks after the son of Arlington had rattled home to finish a close second at Bathurst in just his second start, We Can’t Be Beaten was forced back to the paddock, and virtually missed all of 2018, until the test of patience was rewarded seven weeks ago when he returned with an encouraging closing effort at Orange.

Then back home on Mudgee Cup day he ran a slashing second behind local rival The Warlord.

Two weeks later, he just missed again, powering home as a well-backed favourite at Dubbo. Today the four-year-old lines up as the horse to beat in the maiden (1600m) at Gunnedah. Leading rider Greg Ryan jumps back aboard, and there’s an air of confidence that this is the race.

Don’t be surprised if We Can’t Be Beaten is a late challenger in the Central Districts country championship qualifier. It wouldn’t be the first time Williams has pulled something out of the hat.

Last year Noel’s Gift ploughed through the mud at nearly 100-1 to land second place in the qualifier at home and earn a trip to Randwick for the $500,000 final.

We Can’t Be Beaten might not be the only success for the Williams stable today, with five-year-old Redirect looking nicely placed second-up in a BM58 (1000m). The lightly raced son of Bon Hoffa hasn’t won since breaking his maiden at Wellington nearly two years ago, but has run a stack of placings, continually working home from off the speed.

Today, though, from a cosy inside draw and in a moderate-sized field, he doesn’t have to settle too far back, and can be produced late for a winning surge.
