Sokratis first player to score for Arsenal without featuring for Arsene Wenger since 1996

The Greek defender found the back of the net in Thursday’s Europa League win over Qarabag.

And the strike meant he became the first player to bag a goal for the Gunners without having played for Wenger since Glenn Helder in January 1996.

Sokratis has been a major hit since moving to the Premier League from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

The cente-back has slotted straight into Unai Emery’s starting XI at the Emirates.

Sokratis endured a sticky start to his Gunners career, suffering back-to-back defeats against Chelsea and Manchester City.

But he has since forged a fine partnership with Shkodran Mustafi at the back, helping Arsenal win their last five Premier league games in a row.

But one man struggling for form is Sead Kolasinac, who was singled out by ex-Gunner Martin Keown at the end of the win in Azerbaijan.

Keown told BT Sport: “Kolasinac was a problem. He’s a player that wants to go forward but doesn’t want to defend.

“He really was a weakness for Arsenal (tonight). He’s not been in with the group, he’s not played in the back four. He’s not picked up the message of what the manager is looking for.”
