Siobhan Cattigan dead at 26: Scottish international rugby star dies suddenly as tributes pour in for 'inspiration'

SCOTLAND international rugby player Siobhan Cattigan has suddenly passed away at the age of just 26.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that the back row, who was capped 19 times by Scotland, died on Friday.

Following the news, a statement from the national governing body read: "Scottish Rugby is deeply saddened to hear Scotland international Siobhan Cattigan has died.

"The thoughts of all our people and players go out to Siobhan's family and many team-mates at Stirling County and Scotland at this incredibly difficult time.

"Specialist Scottish Rugby employees are now providing ongoing support to those most closely affected."

Tributes have poured in for the young rugby star who spent her club career playing at Stirling County.

A statement from Siobhan's Stirling club ready: "It's with a heavy heart we pass on the news of the tragic passing of Siobhan (Shibby) on Friday November 26.

"Shibby has been a big part of County for many years and will be hugely missed by everyone at the club.

"She was central to the development of women's rugby within the club and an inspiration to the girls in the youth section.

"Shibby was a team-mate and friend and we deeply mourn her loss.

"Our love, thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Shibby's family at this devastating time.

"We very much hope their privacy will be respected by everyone as they deal with their tragic loss."

Cattigan made her debut for Scotland against Wales in the 2018 Six Nations.

She went on to start three of their 2021 Six Nations matches, before appearing for Scotland against Spain in a World Cup qualifier in September.

Rugby icon Sir Bill Beaumont added: "Deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Scotland international Siobhan Cattigan.

"She was a fine player and an inspiration to many. My thoughts are with Siobhan's family and her Scotland and Stirling County teammates and friends at this difficult time."
