Simon Mignolet concedes howler to Man Utd target Bruno Fernandes in 2-2 pre-season draw with Sporting – The Sun

SIMON MIGNOLET did nothing to convince Jurgen Klopp he is worthy of a spot in the Liverpool first-team after a howler in a 2-2 draw with Sporting Lisbon.

A mistake straight out of Loris Karius' books, the Red's second choice stopper allowed Bruno Fernandes' long ranged effort bounce past him just four minutes into the contest.

The Belgium international was given a golden opportunity to impress in Liverpool's final game of their US tour but fell at the first hurdle.

Fernandes, heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, unleashed a long strike from distance that appeared to be a straight-forward stop for Mignolet.

But the ball bounced right in front of him before hitting his hands and nestling in the back of the net.

Mignolet, 31, looked like he wanted the ground to open up as he stood there was his hands on his hips.

Divock Origi would spare his blushes 16 minutes later when the Champions League hero bundled home the equaliser.

The keeper spilled Jordan Henderson's header and the Belgium was on hand to knock the ball home.

Georginio Wijnaldum then put Liverpool ahead on the stroke of half-time when he capitalised on Thiago Ilori's error.

The Dutchman was left with time in the box to pick out a finish as the Reds went into a deserved lead.

But the Portuguese side were not willing to stick to the script and strung together a terrific move to score a cracking equaliser.

A slick move that started from the back carved the Liverpool defence open down the right side and Wendel made no mistake with his finish inside the box.

Liverpool will now head back to England where they will take on Napoli and Lyon before their Community Shield final with Manchester City.
