Signing Gareth Bale would break Man Utd’s own transfer policy but they remain in hunt for Real Madrid outcast

Old Trafford vice-chairman Ed Woodward prefers the club to target younger players that have huge potential and a high resale value.

Madrid have reportedly run out of patience with Bale and are ready to offload him at the end of the season.

United are among the clubs that have indicated interest, but he is not the stereotypical Old Trafford signing.

Bale, who turns 30 in July, would offer the club a very low resale value if he was to join in the summer.

And United's bosses have made exceptions in the past when it comes to prioritising the player over the potential profit.

During Jose Mourinho's reign, the club signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2016 when he was 34 years old.

Alexis Sanchez joined from Arsenal at the age of 29 and Nemanja Matic signed from Chelsea when he was 28.

And the club bosses will be well aware that Solskjaer's squad is need of reinforcements on the right side of attack.
