Season over for Demon Sloane after ACL injury

Shae Sloane's AFLW debut turned into a nightmare on Sunday, with the Melbourne recruit out for the remainder of the season after scans confirmed she had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.

Sloane, the sister of Adelaide co-captain Rory Sloane, hurt her knee in a marking contest during the Demons' loss to Fremantle at Casey Fields.

The former Australian volleyball captain sat out the rest of the game and the news on Monday was not good.

“Shae was involved in an innocuous incident on Sunday at Casey Fields, and unfortunately scans have confirmed that she has torn her anterior cruciate ligament,” the Dees' women's football manager Daniel McPherson said on the club's website.

“Shae has been a terrific addition to our club this year, and although this injury is an extremely disappointing result, Shae will continue to play an important support role for the rest of the girls throughout the remainder of this season.”

Sloane, 26, is in her first season with the Demons, who picked her up as a rookie last year.

“Given she has just crossed over to AFLW, Shae will now have the opportunity to work closely with our coaching staff and develop her knowledge of the game, to help ensure she comes back an even better player when she returns to the field next year,” McPherson said.

“Shae will be given all the support she needs as she prepares to begin her recovery from this setback.”
