Saudi prince Mohammad bin Salman may be no better for Manchester United than the Glazer family

If the Glazer family sold, then the crippling £500m debt leveraged on Man United – which has seen over £1 billion leave the club in interest repayments – would be wiped out.

United would be debt free again and at a time when money is so necessary to compete at the highest level with Manchester City, it could be a huge moment for United.

From a strict standpoint against the Glazers, a takeover would be brilliant.

They’ve done nothing but leech money out of United and our success has been hampered by their ownership since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Only his brilliance allowed us to maintain success when he was in charge. Without them, United wouldn’t be in the position we currently find ourselves.

Any takeover would see United then given an untold amount of money to go out and buy the world’s best players to create a squad capable of bringing United back to the top again.

Kylian Mbappe, Neymar et al – no player would be out of reach.

United have spent £600m on new signings since Sir Alex Ferguson retired but being bought by the Salman family would see United’s already huge financial muscle get a huge injection.

However, there are real questions to be asked about any takeover from the Salman family from a moral standpoint, both as a United fan and a human.

United fans have despised the influx of oil money into the Premier League.

From Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea to Sheikh Mansour’s Manchester City, oil money has been responsible for turning the Premier League into the money machine it is and for derailing United’s dominance.

Without it, who knows, United could still be flying high.

So, to then be owned and powered by oil money, after years of despising how it changed the scope of the Premier League with Chelsea and City, would have to see United fans backtrack on so much of what we’ve said for years.

Then there’s the human aspect.

Oil money from a country with a questionable human rights record, from an owner who is currently in the press as part of an investigation into the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi – there is more than one question to be asked about whether an ownership under the Salman family would be morally correct.

But when it comes to money, the Salman family have almost unparalleled power.

Their estimated £850 billion worth would be enough to buy United 283 times over at the current market value of £3 billion.

If they wanted to buy United and offered the Glazers enough money, the Glazers would sell. Money talks, after all.

It leaves United fans in a tough crossroads.

This could be a chance to finally rid the club of the Glazers and their leveraged debts which have been such a burden for almost two decades but if getting rid of the Glazers means welcoming the Salman family to Old Trafford, is that really the right thing to want?
