Samcro all set for Punchestown battle with Faugheen in mouthwatering Morgiana

The two Cheltenham Festival winners are on track to take each other on for Grade 1 glory in the Morgiana Hurdle this weekend.

Trainer Gordon Elliott has confirmed superstar Samcro is on target for a crack at the prestigious top level contest – despite his flop last time out.

The six-year-old was overhauled by the lower-rated Bedrock in the closing stages of his reappearance at Down Royal.

However, connections believe he's now back to his best as he bids to dethrone last year's winner Faugheen in Sunday's clash of the titans.

"Davy Russell will ride him," Elliott told At The Races.

"We're declaring these horses, but it's just been an extreme year with the ground being so good.

"We're all pulling our hair out, if we take them out late we're getting fined, which is a bit harsh, but we can't chance these horses.

"He'll definitely be declared, as will Tombstone."

Also entered for the race is last year's Champion Hurdle runner-up, Melon, though he's unlikely to run with his stable instead relying on Faugheen.

Laurina is also likely to head elsewhere, but Supasundae and Tombstone are on target for the race.

Sharjah and Wicklow Brave could complete the field.
