Sam Darnold loses boot but doesn’t gain much clarity

Todd Bowles will be back for the Jets’ next game (home against the Patriots), but the coach doesn’t yet know whether Sam Darnold will be watching from the sideline, too.

Bowles confirmed Monday that the rookie quarterback — who suffered a strained foot against the Dolphins on Nov. 4 — is no longer wearing a walking boot, but Darnold’s first meeting against Tom Brady and Bill Belichick may not come until the regular-season finale in New England.

“It’s still early for him,” Bowles said. “We’ll see how it goes through the bye week and how it looks next week. I’ll have a better idea. If not, Josh [McCown] will line up, and we’ll go.”

Darnold, 21, started the team’s first nine games of the season but was sidelined for the first time for Sunday’s loss to the Bills. The third-overall pick’s most recent outing resulted in him throwing a career-worst four interceptions in Miami, giving Darnold an NFL-high 14 interceptions this season.

McCown, 39, completed 17-of-34 passes for 135 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the 41-10 loss to the Bills. Former Giant Davis Webb served as the backup and has still never taken a regular-season snap in his career.
