Ryder Cup 2018: Phil Mickelson dumps tee shot into the water and Twitter is in tears of laughter as shot clinches Europe victory

The bizarre moment came just seconds after Francesco Molinari laid up a puttable drive off the pin on the the par-three l'Appel hole.

Mickelson, 48, has had a horror show on the outskirts of Paris and Europe have well and truly avenged the Americans' massive victory in Hazeltine two years ago.

Lefty picked up 2½ points last year as the Americans powered to a 17-11 triumph, but there was to be no such result on European soil this time around.

One of four captain's picks this time around, Mickelson lost alongside Bryson Dechambeau on Friday afternoon in the foursomes against Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren.

He then was snubbed for every other session on Saturday and was put up against red hot Molinari.

And after the Italian built up a considerable lead going into the 16th, he drove his tee shot into the drink.

Given Europe has had some spectacular winning moments in recent years, including Graeme Mcdowell's 15ft putt on the 16th at Celtic Manor in 2010 and Martin Kaymer's 5ft pressure putt to complete the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

Twitter was both incredulous that Lefty had denied Europe their glory moment. Not that they cared.

Sergio Garcia was in tears during the winning moment, while Tommy Fleetwood was carried on the shoulders of fans around the course as the Europeans celebrated their latest glorious victory.

It is Europe's 12th win since the Ryder Cup became USA vs Europe in 1979 – and there was no shortage of good Champagne to hand.

According to American fans, the broadcasters played an advert promoting Mickleson and Callaway just seconds after his blunder — which pretty much sums up their entire weekend.
